First dune buggy - Henry J. Kaiser - 1963 to 1965

This picture shows what a Henry J. Kaiser looked like...
before modifications!  I just read the ad and it said that
it got from 30 to 35 miles per gallon!  Wow!

There I am at age 16!  What a guy!  We are just getting ready for the maiden voyage in 1964.

I was a 15 year old kid in 1963 when my dad first started building a dune buggy and "I sort of helped out."  We took an old Henry J. Kaiser that was rusted out and stripped the body off.  Dad cut 2 feet out of the frame and he also made a set of wide wheels.  Except for the aluminum cowling around the engine, the body was actually made of wood.  It had a vapor-lock problem and was always stuck in the sand... but I loved it!

That is me driving in each of the pics above.  The bottom picture (above) shows the scariest thing I have done in the dunes.  Dad wanted a picture of us jumping off a little dune.  Of course, with the engine out front, it wanted to do a nose dive.  This was about the 4th attempt, with dad yelling "Faster!" over and over.  This was also the last attempt!  I think it taught me an appreciation for what might go wrong.  In all of these years I have never had an accident in the sand.  Of course... I did run over myself in the garage
